Common Sense

While artificial intelligence (AI) is still finding its proper place, and people often waver between progress and feeling overwhelmed when dealing with digitalization, two things are once again coming into sharper focus: common sense and the awareness that it is humanity’s most important tool for preserving and upholding its values—even when society, politics, or the economy often try to impose different standards.

AI was initially often portrayed as a technology that could replace humans in their leading role. At the same time, rapid digitalization has created uncertainty rather than clarity for many people. It is precisely in this situation that the continued importance of humans themselves becomes apparent.

Why? From birth, humans possess the ability, through their brains, to create order—especially when external structures are no longer sufficient. Using common sense, they set standards and provide guidance. It is becoming increasingly clear: AI and digitalization are tools that humans use to work more efficiently and to realign a society that has lost its balance more strongly with values.

This perspective also shapes our work—both in the development of new strategies and as a think tank and sparring partner. For us, the following applies: Humans are and remain the measure of all things. Our experience shows that there is no real alternative to this. AI and digitalization are technologies created by humans. They drive technological change and open up new possibilities for creativity and innovation. In this way, they can help ensure a meaningful and purpose-driven life in the future as well.

Many examples demonstrate what individuals can achieve: One such example is Steve Jobs, who gave the world the smartphone. Or the duo of Bill Gates and Paul Allen, the founders of Microsoft. In all areas of life, especially in the sciences, on both a grand and a small scale, we experience and benefit from what the power of the brain accomplishes and what common sense teaches us.

We must not grow weary of continuing to nurture the human brain and its capabilities.

AI can broaden our horizons and open up new perspectives. It expands our view into dimensions that are new and allows us to use precious time for efficient work. The rewards of this benefit all people in the world.

Ultimately, however, one thing remains crucial: common sense helps us to use these developments correctly and shape them meaningfully. When both are applied wisely, people worldwide benefit—especially those hoping for better living conditions.
